The future of fiberglass and general outlook

The industry has experienced a lot of growth in pultrusion over the past forty plus years. There have been significant advancements in raw materials such as continuous strand mat, stitched glass reinforcements, surfacing veil, better resins, better additives for fire retardancy, and processing.

We expect there will continue to be improvements in raw materials and processing such as UV resistant resins, resins with improved fire, smoke, and toxicity performance, and resins providing improved mechanical properties for toughness, through thickness properties, impact, etc.

In terms of applications, FRP materials should continue to replace steel, timber, and aluminum where the benefits and features of FRP add significant value. We anticipate greater use of FRP by the military, especially in navy ships.

Other areas where FRP will become common are docks and marinas, eventually residential home building, and RV's as weight, rot, and long term durability become more of a concern. There should also be more architectural applications in commercial building construction of office buildings, condominiums, coastal developments, and areas where resistance to rotting or rust are important..
